The 8th Winter Workshop and School on Astroparticle Physics (WAPP)-2013 will be organized at the Centre for Astroparticle Physics and Space Science (CAPSS), Bose Institute, Mayapuri, Darjeeling during December 17-28, 2013 in association with Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai.

 

Participation in the workshop is by invitation

and

Participation of students in the school is by application followed by rigorous selection procedure.

 

Winter Workshop in Astroparticle Physics (Dec 17-19, 2013)

We expect that about 30 scientists working in the areas of theoretical and experimental astroparticle physics and high energy astrophysics within the country and abroad, many of whom are world leaders in their respective research fields, will participate in the workshop. Exciting new developments in the fields of Solar-Terrestrial (ST) physics, Heliospheric Physics, Cosmic-Ray Astrophysics and VHE Gamma-Ray Astronomy are expected to be discussed in the workshop. We would come to know the recent results of various ground-based and space-based experiments in high energy particle astrophysics that are recently being performed in national and international levels.

 

Objective and Scope of the Winter School

The philosophy of the Winter School is to expose young minds to the excitement in the field of experimental high energy astroparticle physics. The school would tentatively consist of two sessions, each of four hours duration everyday. The first session in the morning would consist of a set of four lectures in advanced areas of astroparticle physics, high energy physics and astronomy. In the second session in the afternoon, the students would have an opportunity to acquire hands-on experience by working with state-of-the-art equipments. They would be using high speed electronics, fast PMTs, plastic scintillators etc. They will make measurements on the properties on muons, study radio emission from the Sun and get familiar with modern data acquisition and analysis techniques . The students participating in the winter school would have an opportunity to get exposed to the modern concepts in these areas that would motivate them to take up a career of research in the frontier areas of high energy astrophysics.

 

Morning Lecture Sessions (Subject to modifications)

During the period December 20-28, 2013 the school would be conducted on 8 days, with December 25 being a holiday. During these 8 days a total of 32 lectures, each of 50 minutes duration, would be delivered during the morning sessions covering the following areas:

  1. Physics of High Energy Interactions

  2. High Energy Astroparticle Physics

  3. VHE Gamma-Ray Astronomy

  4. Solar-Terrestrial (ST) Physics

  5. Computational Methods for Data Analysis

  6. Detection of Charged Particles

 

Laboratory Sessions in the Afternoon

A total of eight laboratory experiments are being set-up with four broad themes, namely,

The concrete experiments that have been set-up for this school are the following:

  1. Calibration of each of the PMTs of the cosmic ray scintillators to maximize sensitivity and to minimize noise (Paddle-Plateauing) and the determination of the flux of the cosmic-ray muons.

  2. Measurement of the decay lifetime of the muons.

  3. To study various components of the data acquisition system used in cosmic-ray experiments.

  4. Gamma ray spectroscopy.

  5. Overview of nuclear track detectors.

  6. To determine the radio temperature of the Sun.

  7. To study the generation and transmission of baseband pulse by using transmission lines.

  8. Overview of Data analysis technique by using ROOT.

 

Each participant would have an opportunity to take part in one experiment per day for a total of 8 experiments over the course of the winter school.
